Multisensory Department
‘The Multi Sensory Department in Tor Bank School strongly believe that our children and young people have the right to learn within a bright and stimulating environment that is caring, enabling supportive and fun’.
There are currently three classes within the Multi-Sensory Department. Pupils range from 3 – 19 years of age. All classes benefit from an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to ensure that all individual pupils needs are met. Staff and pupils benefit from working closely with parents/ carers, our school-based therapy team including speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and the school nursing team. We also benefit from working with many other professionals including music therapists, paediatricians, dieticians, peripatetic teachers and social workers, incorporating programmes and advice from such people into pupils Personal Learning Programme (PLP).
The Curriculum
We deliver specialist individual programmes for our pupils which are planned and delivered by a team of professionals collaboratively. Each individualised programme is matched, where appropriate to the experiences offered within the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
Our multi-sensory curriculum has been developed to ensure there is progression, continuity and age appropriate learning experiences for each individual pupil in the following areas:-
- Personal and social interaction
- Communication
- Early Cognitive Development
- Physical Development
- Sensory Awareness
We offer a variety of fun sensory programmes including, Sensology, Dance Massage, PE, Sensory Stories and Story Massage.
This year we have introduced Twinkleboost Sensory Explores to our curriculum. We recognise the importance of outdoor exploration and learning for our pupils’ education and wellbeing. This programme combines elements of Forest school with our outdoor sensory stories. Working with our pupils in this setting brings opportunities to connect with people and nature, communicate and inspire whilst enhancing their learning and well-being. Through child led activities we hope this will allow our pupils to participate at their own pace and in line with their interests.
